Kamal Haasan Moves Karnataka High Court Over ‘Thug Life’ Ban Amid Language Controversy

Court, seeking urgent legal intervention to ensure the release of his much-anticipated film Thug Life in Karnataka. The move follows a statewide backlash over his recent linguistic remarks and a subsequent ban imposed by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC).
Haasan filed the petition through his production house, Raaj Kamal Films International, requesting the court to direct the state government, police authorities, and film regulatory bodies to allow the film’s smooth release and provide security to theatres planning to screen it. The film, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam, stars Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan, and Trisha Krishnan and is scheduled for worldwide release on June 5, 2025.
Controversy Over Language Remarks
The controversy stems from Kamal Haasan’s recent promotional event, where he stated that “Kannada was born from Tamil.” The remark sparked outrage among several pro-Kannada groups, who termed it offensive and historically inaccurate. The backlash quickly escalated, with some groups warning Bengaluru-based theatres against screening Thug Life, urging the public to boycott the film.
In response, the KFCC unofficially blocked the release of the movie, citing concerns about law and order. This prompted Haasan to seek legal recourse, arguing that freedom of expression and creative freedom must be upheld.
Industry Reactions
The incident also caught the attention of notable figures from the Kannada film industry. Actor Shiva Rajkumar initially appeared to support Haasan, suggesting that the veteran actor’s remarks were likely misinterpreted. However, he later backtracked, stating, “I didn’t fully understand what he meant when I made my initial comment.”
Meanwhile, supporters of Haasan argue that the statement was taken out of context and that the focus should remain on the cinematic merit of Thug Life, not political or linguistic interpretations.
A Crucial Court Decision Ahead of Release
With just days left for the film’s release, the Karnataka High Court’s decision will be pivotal in determining whether Thug Life will be screened in theatres across the state. Haasan’s legal team has emphasized the importance of preventing unlawful censorship and ensuring the protection of artists’ rights.
The outcome of the case could also set a precedent for how linguistic and cultural sensitivities are navigated in India’s multilingual entertainment industry, where cinema often intersects with regional identity and politics.
Thug Life marks a major reunion between Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam and is expected to be one of the biggest South Indian film releases of the year.
