In Indian cinema, the Manipuri-language film Boong has won the Best Children’s and Family Film award at the 2026 BAFTA. It marks a significant global achievement. The film became the first Indian movie ever to maintain the honour in this category, showcasing the growing international credit of regional Indian storytelling.

The awards ritual was held on February 22 at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The Boong emerged as a surprise winner, beating main international contenders like Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, Zootopia 2, and French animated feature Arco. The victory drew extensive attention, as a small-budget Indian film triumphed over big-budget universal productions.

It is directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and supported by actor-producer Farhan Akhtar along with Ritesh Sidhwani. Boong tells a heartfelt coming-of-age story set in Manipur. The film is about a young boy who finds out to join up with his family after his father strangely disappears. It can embark on a disturbing journey with his best friend in hopes of bringing happiness back to his mother.

Working in the lead role, star cast child actor Gugun Kipgen, the film merges the quest with deeper themes such as social tensions, individuality, and belonging in modern Manipur. Critics have praised the film for its moving sincerity and culturally rooted storytelling. It can resonate with users across borders.

Before its BAFTA triumph, Boong had previously gained worldwide attention through screenings at impressive festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival and several global showcases. The film’s achievement is being seen as a prime milestone for cinema from India’s Northeast, an area rarely represented on global award platforms.

Industry voices have hailed the win as evidence that authentic, locally rooted stories can achieve worldwide approval. With this marker victory, Boong not just elevates Manipuri cinema but also boosts India’s presence on the worldwide film stage.
