India's official entry for the 98th Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film, Homebound, will be on Netflix starting tomorrow, November 21. The film's digital release was confirmed along with the announcement by the OTT platform.
The movie, produced by Karan Johar and directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, has Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in the lead roles. The film, which was praised by critics, failed to generate interest in theatres, and consequently, disappointment arose from Johar. He suggested that the film's theatrical response could affect his future project decisions.
Audiences criticized the film's marketing and release strategy, with many pointing to inadequate promotion as the main cause of its poor performance. Nevertheless, the movie still earned a spot on the international scene. It was showcased in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2025, where it received a nine-minute standing ovation, and it was declared the second runner-up for the International People’s Choice Award. The film also received another standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2025.
Homebound delves into caste and religious prejudice in India and narrates the story of two friends battling the forces of society while carving out their own lives. The film's deft storytelling and thematic richness have led to industry experts predicting a huge viewership upon its Netflix release.
