The Korean film No Other Choice featuring Lee Gyung-Hun and Son Yeh-Jin has become one of the biggest winners at the 83rd Golden Globes, receiving nominations for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Motion Picture in a Non-English Language.

The director Park Chan-wook was enthusiastic about the award, mentioning the other 2025 film KPop Demon Hunters, which also got several nominations, as a part of the trend towards the global acceptance of Korean cinema and animation.

Historic Nomination for ‘No Other Choice’

No Other Choice thus became the first Korean film to be nominated under the main Best Picture category at the Golden Globes with this nomination. The previous Korean films like Minari and the Academy Award-winning Parasite had lost the chance because of the non-English language restriction. No Other Choice was favored to win and was also finally allowed to acquire the spotlight, thanks to the Golden Globes’ change in the qualifying rules.

Park Chan-Wook Praises ‘KPop Demon Hunters’

In a chat with Variety, Park praised KPop Demon Hunters for the breakthrough in animated films that had captured the hearts of the audiences.

“One of the great joys of this awards campaign has been running into [director] Maggie Kang. I didn’t know her before, but we’ve become best friends through this process. Congratulations to her and her team on the nominations.”

Park also mentioned:

“KPop Demon Hunters was actually the first movie I watched in my redesigned home screening room. During the climax, when the three members unite on stage, I cried—it was such a universal emotional experience. This film truly demonstrates the potential of animation as a medium.”

Celebrating Korean Style

Besides, Park also revealed a fun way of celebrating. He presented a ramen cup featuring the fictional girl group Huntr/x and said:

“I had drinks with my wife last night, so I’ll recover from my hangover Korean style, with my KPop Demon Hunters ramen.”

The nominations received by No Other Choice and KPop Demon Hunters—three each—support the view that 2025 is a turning point in Korean cinema, with both live and animated films getting international acknowledgment.
