Acclaimed filmmaker Vikram Sugumaran, best known for his powerful debut Madha Yaanai Koottam, passed away on Monday at the age of 47 after suffering a cardiac arrest in Chennai.

According to sources close to the director, Vikram was returning from Madurai to Chennai after narrating a new script to a producer. He was preparing to travel by bus when he suddenly experienced severe chest pain. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, doctors were unable to revive him.

Vikram Sugumaran is survived by his wife and children.

He began his film journey as an assistant to legendary filmmaker Balu Mahendra between 1999 and 2000. His breakout directorial, Madha Yaanai Koottam, won widespread praise for its gritty portrayal of rural life and compelling social themes. His latest film, Raavana Kottam (2023), starred Shanthnu Bhagyaraj in the lead.

Actor Shanthnu paid tribute to the late director on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

"RIP dearest brother. I've learnt so much from you & will always cherish every moment. Gone too soon. You will be missed. #RIPVikramSugumaran"
