Rajinikanth in Coolie — the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial enters ₹200 crore club despite Monday dip.

Rajinikanth’s much-awaited crime drama Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, witnessed a sharp dip at the worldwide box office on its first Monday. Despite a record-breaking weekend, the film collected ₹12.15 crore nett in India on Day 5, bringing its domestic total to ₹206.67 crore nett.
Coolie Registers 65% Dip on First Monday
After a thunderous start with ₹65 crore nett on Day 1 and ₹151 crore gross globally within four days, Coolie entered the ₹400 crore worldwide club swiftly. However, mixed to negative reviews have started denting its momentum. On Monday, the film faced a 65.5% drop from Sunday’s ₹35.25 crore, though it still performed better than rival War 2, which managed only ₹8.4 crore.
Trailing Behind Saiyaara and Chhaava
While Coolie remains a strong performer, it lags behind Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava and Ahaan Panday’s Saiyaara, both of which registered ₹24 crore on their first Mondays. The film’s numbers also fall short of Rajinikanth’s own Jailer (2023), which earned ₹23.55 crore on the same day. However, it has outperformed his recent outing Vettaiyan, which collected only ₹5.6 crore on its first weekday.
Occupancy and Audience Response
Industry tracker Sacnilk reported an overall 32.18% occupancy in the Tamil market on Monday. The occupancy started low at 23.58% in morning shows, climbed to 29.31% in the afternoon, peaked at 38.07% in the evening, before settling at 37.76% at night.
Box Office Outlook
With collections slowing, doubts remain over whether Coolie can become 2025’s top-grossing Indian film. Makers are eyeing the ₹500 crore mark within 10 days, but competition from upcoming big releases could pose hurdles.
Star-Studded Cast & Crew
Apart from Rajinikanth, Coolie boasts a stellar ensemble including Nagarjuna Akkineni, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, and Rachita Ram, with Aamir Khan in a cameo role. The film features music by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Girish Gangadharan, and editing by Philomin Raj.
