RM, the leader of the global K-pop group BTS, discussed his thoughts on marriage and raising children during a live session on Weverse from October 5. At 32 years old, RM, whose real name is Kim Namjoon, reflected on the timing of marriage, stating he may choose to marry or continue living independently, noting there is no universally correct path.
He addressed societal and media pressures surrounding marriage, particularly for women. RM highlighted that while practical concerns often shape expectations, individuals should make personal choices rather than conforming to external pressures.
The BTS member elaborated on marriage as a solution for loneliness, questioning whether entering marriage to avoid solitude is effective. He observed that after marriage, some may again seek personal space, implying that marriage should not serve as an escape.
On the topic of parenthood, RM expressed concerns about raising a child while managing his own life. He recalled his own childhood experiences and noted the difficulties of responsibility toward a new life, highlighting that there is no definitive approach to being a parent.
He also stressed perspective differences between married and unmarried individuals, urging people to consider others’ opinions as subjective rather than absolute. RM concluded by reflecting on generational shifts in Korea, noting that those born in the 1990s are among the first to view marriage as a personal choice rather than a mandatory milestone.
“Ultimately, everyone should follow their own decisions,” RM said.
