Animal, Lust Stories 2 among top 10 hindi films that defined 2023

The year 2023 marked a cinematic renaissance for Hindi films, with the return of Shah Rukh Khan in "Pathaan" and numerous standout performances. Despite the uneven quality, both in theaters and on OTT platforms, the year showcased promising films. Here's a list of the ten best Hindi films of the year, in no particular order:

Gulmohar:

Notable for its excellent cast, including Sharmila Tagore and Amol Palekar, "Gulmohar" delves into urban anxieties within joint families. The film is graceful, elegant, and emotionally resonant, featuring a scene-stealing performance by Manoj Bajpayee.

Lust Stories 2 (The Mirror):

Konkona Sen Sharma's "The Mirror," a short film, stands out for its provocative and insightful take on pleasure, class, and the female gaze. Tillotama Shome and Amruta Subhash deliver exceptional performances, making it a bold and subversive addition to the list.

Tarla:

A straightforward underdog narrative, "Tarla" offers a homely and comforting portrayal of a real-life story. Huma Qureshi and Sharib Hashmi shine in their roles, depicting the highs and middling but satisfying victories of TV stardom.

Rocky Aur Rani kii Prem Kahaani:

Karan Johar's film successfully revives the larger-than-life romance genre, giving it intricate and progressive updates. Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi's unexpected chemistry steals the show, making it a grand and emotionally resonant experience.

OMG2:

Featuring Akshay Kumar, "OMG2" stands out for its courage to mainstream taboo subjects like sex education. Despite flaws, the film's success is owed to Pankaj Tripathi's dependable performance and the creators' bold approach.

Jawan:

Shah Rukh Khan's "Jawan" showcases a new incarnation of the star, with a rough-talking and seductive character. The film, experienced best in theaters, solidifies Khan's stardom with whimsical and well-curated moments.

12th Fail:

Vidhu Vinod Chopra's return to the screens offers a refreshing template for the underdog narrative. Vikrant Massey's stupendous performance and the film's refusal to succumb to clichés make it a standout in acting and directing.

Three of Us:

Avinash Arun's melancholic exploration of memory is quietly perturbing and visually stunning. The film, featuring Shefali Shah, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Swanand Kirkire, unfolds in the silence of its many images, making it the most beautiful-looking film of the year.

Animal:

While "Animal" may not be everyone's cup of madness and provocation, Ranbir Kapoor's acting performance is the standout of the year. Despite occasional excesses, the film captivates with its portrayal of Kapoor's transformation from tough guy to madman.

Joram:

Devashish Makhija's "Joram" presents a familiar tale of a cop chasing a culprit but adds a layer of identity as victimhood. The film is the most political of the year, featuring astoundingly pure cinematography, direction, and a superlative performance by Manoj Bajpayee, supported by a terrific cast.
