From humble beginnings in 1923 with just 32 undergraduate students, Andhra Medical College (AMC), the seventh oldest medical college in India has emerged in the last 100 years as a citadel of medical education rolling out experts to the healthcare and research sector across the world.

Scripting one of the trend-setting success stories, it began its journey a century ago as Vizagapatam Medical College with Madras University affiliation. Subsequently, it was brought under Andhra University and renamed as Andhra Medical College on the suggestion of Vice Chancellor Sir CR Reddy in 1936. The college became a super-speciality hospital in 1950s and was brought under AP University of Health Sciences in 1988.

At the beginning it was attached to Government Civil Hospital with 270 beds which was renamed as King George Hospital later. Both AMC and KGH are located in a prime location overlooking the sea with majestic buildings, at a close distance to the famous Collectorate and RK Beach-the most sought after beachfront area in Andhra Pradesh.

AMC has 250 seats in MBBS and 237 PG seats. From this year, Medical Council of India has sanctioned 126 additional PG seats.

The Government of India has granted Rs 150 crore for additional seats whereas the State government has released Rs 26 crore towards its share of 40 per cent of the cost.

The alumni of the college who are placed in plum posts all over the globe in medical hospitals and health industry have contributed generously towards Rs 40-crore centenary block.

"We are celebrating the historic celebrations with the inauguration of the centenary block, holding a CME and a musical extravaganza by the doctors at their alma mater on October 27, 28 and 29 on a grand scale," centenary celebrations committee chairman Dr T Ravi Raju told Bizz Buzz.

Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankar, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and a galaxy of officials from Central and State governments will take part in the celebrations.
