Starting in 2025, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will introduce a significant reform by holding board exams for Classes 10 and 12 twice a year. The change aims to reduce pressure on students and provide them with more flexibility and opportunities to improve their scores.
Is the May Attempt Mandatory?
No, the May attempt is optional. Students who are satisfied with their performance in the first attempt (typically in February-March) do not need to appear for the second exam. However, those looking to improve their scores can opt for the second round in May.
Who Can Appear in Both Attempts?
All students enrolled in Class 10 and Class 12 in CBSE-affiliated schools are eligible.
Students can choose to appear in either one or both sessions.
The best score out of the two attempts will be retained in the final mark sheet.
Why This Change?
This move is part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for more student-friendly reforms and flexible assessment systems. It aims to eliminate the "high-stakes exam pressure" by offering students more chances without penalty.
Impact on Students and Schools:
Schools will have to align their academic calendars to accommodate two board exam sessions.
Students will have more time to prepare and can choose the best time to appear.
It is expected to reduce the anxiety and performance pressure traditionally associated with board exams.
Final Mark Sheet:
CBSE has confirmed that only the better score of the two attempts will be recorded on the student's final certificate. There will be no mention of the number of attempts.
