NTPC Simhadri finalises bid for India's first fuel cell-based microgrid

Visakhapatnam: NTPC Ltd, India's largest integrated energy company, has awarded a project of 'standalone fuel-cell based microgrid with hydrogen production using electrolyser' at its coal-fired Simhadri Super Thermal Power Station near here.
This will be India's first green hydrogen based energy storage project and one of the world's largest, according to NTPC website. It will be a precursor to large scale hydrogen energy storage projects--useful for studying and deploying multiple microgrids in various off-grid and strategic locations of the country.
NTPC Simhadri has also the largest single location floating solar plant.
As per the new project, hydrogen will be produced using the advanced 240 kW Solid Oxide Electrolyser by taking input power from the nearby floating solar project. The hydrogen produced during sunshine hours will be stored at high pressure and will be electrified using a 50 kW solid oxide fuel cell. The system will work in a standalone mode from 5 pm to 7 am.
