Govt purchases from MSMEs exceed target

New Delhi: In the first four months of this fiscal, Central government ministries and departments exceeded the purchase target of 25 per cent from micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by a wide margin.

They bought goods and services over Rs12,834 crore, or 40.4 per cent of the total purchases, from MSMEs till July-end, official sources told Bizz Buzz. As many as 32,807 MSMEs benefited because of the government policy to buy one-quarter of goods and services from MSMEs.

Over 37 per cent of the total government purchases from MSMEs were made by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Rs4,798.6 crore. The ministry has a shopping budget of over Rs 27,480 for 2022-23, of which it spent Rs11,494.6 crore in the first four months. It is mandated to buy items worth Rs6,870.2 crore from MSMEs in the current fiscal.

The Ministry of Defence had the second highest annual budget, of Rs11,135 crore, of which the purchase target from MSMEs is Rs3,063.9 crore. Till July, it made purchases worth Rs2,783.8 crore, out of which Rs1,066.7 crore were spent on goods and services from MSMEs.

The next purchaser is the Ministry of Steel, with an annual budget of Rs 10,252.5 crore. In the first four months of this fiscal, Rs 4,230 crore was spent. The target of purchases from MSMEs was Rs 2,563 crore, of which Rs 1,657.8 crore was attained till July.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises has an annual budget of about Rs 8,993 crore, of which Rs 3,153.5 crore was spent till July.
