Power ministry panel suggests real-time monitoring of grid

Vijayawada: In a shot in the arm to the efforts being put in by Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM), the State Designated Agency (SDA) under the Energy Department, that oversees energy efficiency measures in AP, German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ), has come forward to map the measures.

While thanking the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), an agency under the Ministry of Power and GIZ Germany for their gesture to conduct a mapping study of AP, Special Chief Secretary (Energy) K Vijayanand said on Sunday that the State Government is very keen to encourage energy conservation and efficiency in a big way to reduce energy intensity in the economy along with environmental impact and meet increasing demand for energy to a certain extent in the State. This will ultimately help to meet the objective of Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and Energy Minister Peddreddi Ramachandra Reddy to provide 24x7 quality and reliable power supply to electricity consumers.

The activity taken up by GIZ – ‘Energy efficiency in States-mapping and way forward’- will help understand and collate the policies of AP apart from other key states pertaining to energy efficiency, especially in the industrial sector.

GIZ’s activity comes at a time when APSECM is going to propose energy conservation and efficiency policy to the State Government that is expected to save around 16,875 million units (25.6 per cent) worth of Rs 11,779 crore out of total annual energy demand of around 65,830 million units. This is expected to reduce carbon emissions to the tune of around 14.34 million tonnes.

GIZ entrusted-“Energy efficiency in States-mapping and way forward” to world’s leading consultant Price Water Coopers (PwC). The outcome of the mapping study is expected to help in understanding the need for States in promoting energy efficiency and support in development/replication of suitable policy interventions in other States. This study is a part of recently commissioned programme “Energy efficiency in industry and data” by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and GIZ which aims to promote energy efficiency in MSME industries (steel - paper) and conduct knowledge sharing activities for relevant stakeholders.

Prabhat, senior executive of PwC who has been deputed by GIZ Germany through BEE for conducting the mapping study has visited Vijayawada and extensively gone through the energy efficiency activities and achievements of the State.

“While studying energy efficiency programs of AP, we are extremely happy with the major initiatives of APSECM like EC cells, IoT, EC policy, standalone model and awareness programmes. One can straight away say that APSECM is a torchbearer for energy efficiency and an inspiration and motivation for others,” he said.
