Hyderabad After a year-long delay, The Expo 2020 Dubai kicked off with a star-studded inaugural ceremony on Thursday (September 30, 2021). The much-awaited global expo will remain open for public from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.

The inaugural ceremony was streamed live to more than 430 locations across the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The ceremony was attended by Abu Dhabi's powerful Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and a host of other dignitaries.

The Expo 2020 Dubai

Expo 2020 is a world fair - a large international exhibition supervised by Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) of Paris. It showcases achievements of all participating nations. These exhibitions vary in character and are held in different parts of the world at a specific site for a period of time, ranging usually from three to six months.

Currently, the exhibition is being held in Dubai. It was originally scheduled from October 20, 2020 to April 10, 2021. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was rescheduled to kick off on October 1, 2021 and continue till March 31, 2022. Despite being postponed, organisers have kept the name Expo 2020 for marketing and branding purposes. The BIE general assembly in Paris named Dubai as the host on November 27, 2013.

What to look out for?

The expo will have a theme called 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future'. It will also have three sub-themes - opportunity, mobility and sustainability, each with its own pavilion.

Indian Pavilion

The Indian Pavilion will be headed by Vedanta Resources, themed as 'opportunity.' It will capture the vibrant Indian culture and also the capabilities and opportunities that the country presents as a global economic hub to the domestic as well as the foreign investors.

The India Pavilion will see participation from a number of Indian States who will be displaying their culture, tradition, and tremendous business opportunities along with the top corporate groups from India, and the public sector companies. A large number of prominent government ministers, officials, celebrities are set to visit India Pavilion during the six months of Expo 2020, which will also host number of cultural events.

How much did Dubai spend on Expo?

The global exhibition is a massive event with over 190 countries representing the event. Hosting of Dubai Expo 2020 will require substantial investments from the Dubai government across a range of infrastructure and related projects. A total sum of $8.7 billion is believed to have been spent for making Dubai ready for the World Expo.

According to analysts, Dubai Expo 2020 is likely to generate about $23 billion for the host nation.
