Mumbai, Feb 18: In a significant cultural interaction during the Saras Aajeevika Mela 2026 at the U.S. Nagar Carnival, Sameer Roy, Linguistic Advisor of the Bongo Bhashi Mahasabha Foundation (BBMF), met acclaimed singer Iman Chakraborty, who was the celebrity performer at the event.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the vibrant cultural evening where Iman Chakraborty captivated the audience with her soulful renditions. The SARAS AAJEEVIKA MELA, known for celebrating India’s rural entrepreneurship, self-help groups, and cultural diversity, drew a large gathering of art enthusiasts, community leaders, and dignitaries.
During the interaction, Sameer Roy conveyed the appreciation and solidarity of BBMF for Iman Chakraborty’s unwavering stand in support of the Bengali language during her recent concert at Rajarhat. He formally shared a Welcome and Appeal Letter issued by Dr. Shubhro Chakrabartty, Founder of BBMF, recognizing her role as a cultural torchbearer and advocate of linguistic dignity.
“Language is not merely a tool of communication; it is the living archive of a civilization. When we protect Bengali, we are not defending words - we are safeguarding memory, identity, and the intellectual future of generations to come,” said Dr. Shubhro Chakrabartty, Founder, Bongo Bhashi Mahasabha Foundation (BBMF).
The discussion highlighted growing concerns regarding the decline of Bengali-medium educational institutions in various regions and the need for broader institutional support for Bengali language education across India. BBMF emphasized its ongoing efforts toward the protection and revival of Bengali-medium schools, inclusion of Bengali as an optional subject in states with significant Bengali-speaking populations, and promotion of research and technological advancement in Bengali linguistics.
Iman Chakraborty expressed her gratitude for the recognition and reiterated the importance of preserving linguistic and cultural heritage through music and artistic expression. As a nationally acclaimed artist whose Bengali song “Iti Maa” from the film Putul has gained international attention, she continues to represent Bengali culture on prominent platforms.
The SARAS AAJEEVIKA MELA 2026 cultural evening concluded with enthusiastic applause from the audience, marking not only a celebration of music and tradition but also a renewed dialogue on linguistic identity and cultural preservation.
The interaction between BBMF and Iman Chakraborty stands as a symbolic moment underscoring the role of artists, cultural organizations, and civil society in safeguarding India’s rich linguistic diversity.
