For the first time, the government of Maharashtra has introduced a specific Maharashtra teacher dress code. According to the new rules, teachers are advised to avoid wearing jeans, t-shirts, dark-coloured clothes, or any garments with prints or designs. The teacher attire guidelines recommend that female teachers wear a saree, churidar, or salwar with a dupatta and kurta. Male teachers are advised to wear shirts and trousers, ensuring the shirts are properly tucked in.

The Maharashtra teacher uniform policy, as issued by the school education department of the state, is rooted in the concern that children are highly impressionable. The government believes that what teachers wear can significantly impact students. Hence, there is a need for more appropriate dressing standards. The rules are comprehensive and apply to every school in Maharashtra, regardless of whether they are privately or publicly operated and irrespective of their board affiliation.

The new Maharashtra teacher appearance guidelines have sparked a debate among teachers and educators. In response to the critique, a high-ranking officer clarified that these are merely guidelines and not strict mandates, indicating that there's no plan for punitive measures against non-compliance.

In a notable addition to the teacher dress code announcement, the state education department has decided that teachers will now use the prefix "Tr" before their names. This move aims to honour teachers and elevate their status in society. The department of education is also working on creating a unique symbol for teachers to further acknowledge their role and importance.
