Financial institutions across India will observe a string of closures during the week of May 11 to May 18, 2025, due to regular weekend offs and Buddha Purnima on Monday, May 12.
As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) calendar, May includes a mix of nationwide and state-level holidays. While Sundays and alternate Saturdays are standard non-working days, this week also includes closures linked to religious and regional events.
On Monday, May 12, banks across numerous Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Dehradun, Ranchi, and others will remain shut to mark Buddha Purnima. The closure applies to both public and private sector banks in observance of this festival.
Buddha Purnima is a gazetted holiday under the RBI holiday schedule. Hence, banks in major urban centers and various states will suspend physical operations for the day. Online services like internet banking and ATM transactions will continue unaffected.
Here’s a breakdown of bank closures for this week:
* May 11 (Sunday): All banks closed for weekly holiday.
* May 12 (Monday): Buddha Purnima — Nationwide closures in observance of the festival.
* May 16 (Friday): Sikkim State Day — Banks across Sikkim will not operate.
* May 18 (Sunday): Weekly off — Banks remain closed.
May 2025 comprises six RBI-notified holidays along with routine weekly closures. The second and fourth Saturdays — May 10 and May 24 — will also see banks closed. Customers should note the following key dates:
* May 24 (Saturday): Banks shut on account of the fourth Saturday.
* May 25 (Sunday): Weekly off — No banking operations.
* May 26 (Monday): Kazi Nazrul Islam’s birth anniversary — Banks in Tripura will remain shut.
* May 29 (Thursday): Maharana Pratap Jayanti — Banks in Himachal Pradesh will be closed.
Although branch operations will be halted, digital banking services — including mobile banking apps, internet banking portals, and ATM withdrawals — will continue as usual. However, cheque clearances and paper-based transactions governed by the Negotiable Instruments Act will be suspended during these holidays.
