Hyderabad: The 11th edition of Young Chef Olympiad was held in Hyderabad on Tuesday. Student Chefs representing 50 countries participated in the Olympiad. Out of 50 countries, nine qualified for the first round of the competition. The competition is being held simultaneously across Hyderabad, Goa, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Ahmedabad and Kolkata. The finals will be held in Kolkata on February 8. Three winners together will walk away with Rs10 lakh, besides a golden trophy. Azerbaijan has won the trophy in the last consecutive two years.

The student representing India, Ali Akbar from International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) Bangalore was selected from one of the eight campuses in India. He will compete in the first round to be held in Goa.

Dr Suborno Bose, Chairman, IIHM, said: “The Olympiad began small with 15 countries participating in it. Now the number has gone up to 50. The objective of the competition is to spread a message of unity through food. The competition helps to forge new bonds, network, and mutual cooperation for professional growth.”

Dr Nawab Mir Nasir Ali Khan, Honble Consul General of the Republic of Kazakhstan Hyderabad, Dhunji Kavarna, former CEO, ITC Hotels; Chef Steve Munkley, Vice President, Craft Guild of Chefs; Chef Chalapathi Rao, Managing Partner, Simply South Restaurants; Chef Stefan Hogan, Culinary Director, Corinthia Budapest; Chef Sarah Hartnett, Executive Pastry Chef, Smart Group Ltd, and Chef Rahul Akerkar, Founder of Indigo, a Mumbai restaurant, participated as technical and tasting judges.
