Hyderabad: Telangana government is making significant investments for creating efficient transportation networks, which includes expansion of metro rail systems, improving road networks, and modernising public transportation, Telangana Minister for Roads said.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the second edition of the Urban Infrastructure Summit, organised by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), in Hyderabad on Friday, Komati Reddy Venkat Reddy, Minister for Roads, Government of Telangana, underscored the important role of connectivity in urban development.
“Efficient transportation networks are the arteries of urban centres. Significant investments will be made to modernise public transportation, expand metro rail systems, and improve road networks. However, urban infrastructure goes beyond roads and transport. Essential services such as clean water, reliable electricity, and efficient waste management are key components of infrastructure development in Telangana,” the Minister added.
Komati Reddy also highlighted certain initiatives taken up by the government, including improvements in municipal solid waste management and the construction of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs).
On the theme, “Urban Strategies, Policy, and Regulation,” the summit brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on strategies, innovations, and policies that will shape India’s urban infrastructure landscape.
Telangana’s newly launched initiative, ‘SPEED’ led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, which aims to complete 19 major projects was discussed at the summit. The projects include Musi Riverfront development, expansion of satellite towns, new airports, and metro rail extensions.
Suresh Chukkapalli, Founder Chairman, Phoenix Group, in his address emphasised the integration of public transport models from abroad to anchor mobility as a central pillar of urbanization. He stressed on the importance of urban centers as engines of economic growth. He pointed out that cities are the lifelines of a State’s progress, and they must be prepared to meet both current and future challenges.
Dr Poonam Kashyap, Vice Chancellor, ALARD University, Pune, delivered an analysis of the drivers of rapid urbanization in India. She emphasised the importance of integrated planning, citizen engagement, and technological innovation in building sustainable cities.
Rambabu Boorugu, Executive Director, Pranava Group, said that over 50 per cent of the State’s population is expected to be urban by 2028, with the Hyderabad Urban Agglomeration housing 40 per cent of the State’s population. This rapid growth positions Telangana’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) to outpace the national average, Boorugu said.
