Telangana placed on Orange alert as rainfall expected to intensify

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised the weather alert to Orange for several northern districts of Telangana on Thursday evening, while extending the Yellow warning for multiple districts until Tuesday morning.
According to the IMD’s Hyderabad centre, heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusty winds (50-60 km/h) are expected at isolated places in Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nizamabad, and Jagtial districts on Thursday evening. Meanwhile, heavy rain with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 km/h) are likely at isolated spots in Adilabad, Nirmal, Rajanna Sirsilla, Sangareddy, Medak, and Kamareddy districts. Most other districts may experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds.
An IMD scientist noted that rainfall is likely to continue until mid-next week, as Telangana remains under the influence of a low-pressure system currently active over coastal Karnataka and Kerala. Hyderabad is expected to see light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds, which may lead to waterlogging on roads, flooding in low-lying areas, traffic snarls, power outages, and clogged drainage systems.
Heavy rainfall was recorded in parts of Telangana, including Hyderabad, during the night between Wednesday and Thursday, with more rain anticipated on Thursday and Friday.
Data from the Telangana Planning Development Society (TPDS), which operates over 1,000 automated weather stations statewide, showed Medak Mandal receiving the highest rainfall at 119.3 mm as of 6 am Thursday. Masaipet Mandal in Medak followed closely with 112.5 mm. Over a dozen mandals reported rainfall between 80 mm and 99 mm.
In Hyderabad, heavy rains and thundershowers were recorded on Wednesday evening. The Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) reported the highest rainfall of 98.8 mm at Bandlaguda near Santosh Nagar, with Saidapet, Saroornagar, Amberpet, Uppal, Himayat Nagar, and Charminar also recording between 64.8 mm and 92.3 mm.
