The casual declaration of Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan during his lately taken trip to the Godavari area has surprisingly become a political controversy of great proportions in Telangana. What seemed to be a humorous commentary on the greenery of Konaseema has now become the cause for sharp criticism by many Congress leaders from the state of Telangana.
How the Controversy Began
Pawan Kalyan during the trip made a remark that Telangana leaders lauded the greenest scenery of Konaseema and jokingly quipped “maybe a lot of dishti was cast on it.” The comment was not directly attacking the politicians from Telangana, but indeed it was construed as a subtle jab thus triggering an uproar in the political arena.
The first vigorous reaction came from Jadcherla MLA Anirudh Reddy, who made an abnormally fierce warning, implying that Pawan Kalyan should “quit Hyderabad and move to Vijayawada if he is so fond of Godavari.” What was at first a harmless remark now started to flow into a dispute of great intensity.
Senior Leaders Join the Attack
Just when it seemed the matter would be quickly forgotten, more leaders began to attack—making the tensions even worse.
Telangana Cabinet Minister Vakiti Srihari was one of those leaders who criticized Pawan Kalyan’s statements and demanded a formal apology from him. He warned that Pawan Kalyan would “meet trouble in future” if he goes on talking in such a manner. Srihari stated that Pawan Kalyan had utilized the opportunities and resources in Telangana to the fullest to build his career and hence he should “be careful with his words.” Cinematography Minister’s Serious Warning
As a consequence of Pawan Kalyan's non-apology, Telangana Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy for making a most severe pronouncement warned that the actor's films might be banned in Telangana. Since screenings of films fall under his jurisdiction directly, the remark is quite powerful, especially when it comes from someone who is both an actor and a politician.
MLC Balmuri Venkat's Provocative Statement
Moreover, with Congress MLC Balmuri Venkat's aggressively worded threat, the situation further escalated as he uttered that Pawan Kalyan would be "thrashed on the roads" if he does not apologise and hence, exit from the state. He further added that Kalyan's films would be door grams for not getting released in the state.
A Minor Comment Escalates Into a Major Political Storm
The Telangana Congress leaders' utterances reveal that the harmless remark made by Pawan Kalyan has been exaggerated. It has now developed into a full-scale political confrontation with ministers, MLCs, and lawmakers involved where the joke has turned into a heated debate.
Given the rising tempers and the possibility of consequences for both politics and cinema, it would be better for both sides to settle this issue through a peaceful and amicable solution rather than letting it get out of control.
At the heart of it, this debate is over a statement that was neither provocative nor meant to be interpreted as such, which makes the controversy seem much bigger than what the actual situation justified.
