Hyderabad: Over 400 medical students participated in the ‘STOP SUBSTANCE ABUSE’ Run organized by Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (AIMSR) at KBR Park in the city on Sunday. The event was part of the institute’s flagship Inter Medical College Fest, ‘Anastomoz 2025’, and was formally flagged off by Minister for Transport & BC Welfare, Ponnam Prabhakar.

The run aimed to raise awareness about substance abuse, particularly among the youth, and encourage society to take collective responsibility in curbing this growing menace. Dr K Manohar, Dean, AIMSR, and Aparna Reddy, COO, AIMSR, also graced the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Ponnam Prabhakar highlighted the government’s commitment to creating a drug-free Telangana, citing initiatives inspired by the Prime Minister’s call for a “Nasha Mukt Bharat.” He emphasised that tackling substance abuse requires both governmental action and societal participation.

“Many young people believe drugs offer momentary relief, but this temporary escape leads to long-term ruin,” he warned, urging students to become advocates against drug abuse within their communities. The minister also reminded citizens about strict actions against drunk driving, including permanent cancellation of licenses for repeat offenders.

Dr K Manohar said the annual fest begins with a run symbolizing purpose and unity, and this year’s focus on substance abuse sends a strong message to students and the community. He lauded the minister’s presence for inspiring youth empowerment and stressed the social, moral, and personal responsibilities of addressing substance abuse.

Aparna Reddy congratulated students and faculty for organizing the event, appreciating the minister’s support in promoting awareness about this crucial social issue.
