Hyderabad: In a major step toward transforming pain management in healthcare, KIMS Hospital, Gachibowli, on Sunday unveiled an innovative XR (Extended Reality) Technology designed to eliminate various types of pain — from mild injection discomfort to post-surgical, cancer-related, and childbirth pain. The breakthrough technology was introduced during the PainScape 2025 conference, attended by over 160 doctors from across the Telugu states.

The launch was led by Dr Bollineni Bhaskar Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of KIMS Hospitals. Speaking at the event, he emphasised the hospital’s commitment to bringing the latest medical innovations to patients.

“Pain from surgeries, cancer, muscle injuries, or childbirth can deeply affect quality of life. XR technology offers an effective, non-invasive solution to all these challenges,” said Dr Bhaskar Rao and added “We are proud to pioneer such technologies that redefine patient care.”

Dr Ankitha R Chawla, Associate Medical Director and Senior Consultant in Emergency Medicine at KIMS Gachibowli, explained that XR — a blend of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) — helps distract the brain from pain perception. “Children often resist injections or cannulas due to fear of pain. With XR headsets, they are transported into a virtual environment—such as playing outdoors—making the procedure pain-free. Even during childbirth, dialysis, or chemotherapy, XR can reduce or eliminate pain sensations without medication,” she noted.

Dr Randheer Annaram, Consultant in Pain Medicine at KIMS Gachibowli, added that XR helps patients “mentally detach” from pain, reducing the need for strong painkillers like morphine during chemotherapy or dialysis.

“This technology diverts the brain’s focus, effectively erasing the perception of pain. If adopted widely, it can be a game changer even for patients in rural areas,” he said, thanking KIMS leadership for introducing this innovation. The conference brought together several leading medical professionals including Dr. Manimala Rao, Director of Medical Education at KIMS Hospitals; Kishore Reddy, Cluster Head of KIMS Gachibowli; Dr Pradeep Jain, Director of Pain Relief Unit, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi; Dr. Birappa, Director, NIMS Hospital; and Dr Murali Dhar Joshi, among others.

Scientific Chair Dr Akhya Kumar Kar (Additional Director, Anesthesiology, NIMS) and Program Coordinator Dr M Supraja (Senior Consultant, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, KIMS Gachibowli) oversaw the sessions. International experts also participated.
