Residents of Hyderabad will have a rare celestial spectacle to observe on the night of September 7–8, 2025, as a total lunar eclipse, also known as a blood moon, becomes visible across the city. This eclipse is projected to be the longest total lunar eclipse since 2022.
The event will start at 8:58 PM on Sunday, September 7, when the Moon enters the Earth’s penumbral shadow. Observers will notice subtle shading on the lunar surface as the eclipse begins. The partial eclipse will commence at 9:57 PM, with the Moon gradually taking on a reddish hue.
Totality, when the Moon will appear fully red, begins at 11:00 PM and reaches its peak at 11:41 PM, offering stargazers a clear view of the Moon at its closest alignment with the Earth’s shadow. The total eclipse will end at 12:22 AM on Monday, September 8, followed by the partial eclipse concluding at 1:26 AM, and the penumbral phase finishing at 2:25 AM.
During totality, the Moon will be visible in the southeast direction at an altitude of approximately 59.9° and will shift toward the south-southeast as the eclipse progresses. Observers can track the Moon’s position in the sky using altitude and direction coordinates to locate the eclipse accurately.
Experts note that the apparent rotation of the Moon’s disk and the curved shadow path are natural effects caused by the Earth’s rotation. Approximately 85% of the world’s population across Asia, Europe, Africa, and Australia will have a chance to witness this global astronomical event.
