A large crowd gathered at an ATM near Anmol Hotel in Moinbagh, Yakutpura, on Saturday night after the machine reportedly began dispensing more money than the amounts entered by users.
According to local residents, the incident came to light when two individuals withdrew Rs. 3,000 each, but received Rs. 4,000 from the machine. However, their transaction receipts and SMS alerts confirmed that only Rs. 3,000 was debited from their bank accounts.
News of the malfunction quickly spread, prompting more people to visit the ATM and test their luck. Several users confirmed receiving more cash than they had requested. One individual said he withdrew Rs. 1,500 but was given Rs. 1,800 instead.
A witness notified the police, who soon arrived at the location to control the situation and disperse the gathering crowd. Authorities then shuttered the ATM and locked the premises to prevent further use.
Bank officials were contacted and later confirmed that the ATM was likely experiencing a technical fault that caused the incorrect cash disbursements. The machine was serviced overnight, and the issue has since been resolved.
Police also deployed a picket at the site to prevent further public gatherings until the machine was fully inspected and operational again.
