Hyderabad: A newly constructed G+1 barrack for prisoners was inaugurated at Central Prison, Cherlapalli, Hyderabad on Friday by chief guest Dr. Soumya Mishra, Director General of Prisons & Correctional Services.

The newly built barrack has been designed to enhance the accommodation capacity of the prison and will facilitate housing for an additional 108 prisoners. This development is expected to significantly improve living conditions and help ease congestion within the facility.

Speaking on the occasion, Soumya Mishra stated that the construction of the building had been pending for the past four years and was successfully completed within a span of six months.

Soumya Mishra highlighted that the new barrack significantly enhances accommodation capacity and reflects the department’s focused efforts towards strengthening infrastructure.

She further emphasised that such initiatives contribute to improved living conditions and support a more humane, reform-oriented prison environment.

During her visit, Soumya Mishra inspected various activities within the prison, including the prison garden where organic leafy vegetables are cultivated by inmates. She also visited the prison industries unit, interacted with inmates working there, and reviewed the factory premises for the proposed establishment of a new ITI training centre in collaboration with the Directorate of Employment and Training.

Additionally, she inspected the prison library and the NIOS classroom facilities, underscoring the Department’s commitment to education and skill development for inmates.

The Prisons & Correctional Services department reiterated its commitment to infrastructure development, decongestion, and the overall welfare and rehabilitation of prisoners as part of its broader reform agenda.
