The Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council has introduced a temporary replacement rule for the remaining matches of IPL 2025, as reported by ESPNCricinfo. Under this new rule, all ten IPL franchises will have the option to bring in replacement players for the remainder of the season. However, these replacements will not be eligible for retention in the next season.

IPL 2025 Replacement Rule Details

Due to the suspension of the IPL for a week amid the India-Pakistan tensions, several overseas players have become unavailable due to international commitments or personal reasons. Some players, like Jake Fraser-McGurk and Jamie Overton, will not be returning for the remainder of the league. To mitigate this, the IPL governing council has made provisions for teams to sign temporary replacement players.

While temporary replacements will be allowed, they will not be eligible to be retained for the following season, and they must register for the 2026 IPL Player Auction. Players who were signed as replacements before the seven-day suspension will still remain eligible for retention.

CSK and KKR Overseas Players’ Availability

Chennai Super Kings (CSK): CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that all overseas players, except Jamie Overton, are expected to return to the squad. Overton is the only foreign player unavailable for the rest of the season.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR): KKR will also be missing Moeen Ali for the remainder of IPL 2025, while other foreign players, including Quinton de Kock, Spencer Johnson, Andre Russell, and Sunil Narine, will be available for selection.

IPL 2025 Resumption and Venues

The IPL 2025 season will resume on May 17, following a one-week suspension. Six venues—Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad—have been confirmed for the remainder of the group-stage matches. The playoff and final venues are yet to be announced.

Despite the ongoing challenges, the IPL governing council has reassessed the situation and allowed the temporary replacement rule to ensure teams can maintain competitive balance as the season progresses.
