Shreyas Iyer Likely Out of IPL 2026, Punjab Kings on Alert After Fresh Injury Update
Shreyas Iyer may miss IPL 2026 due to a serious injury, creating concerns for Punjab Kings and India’s ODI setup. Latest update reveals recovery timeline, team impact, and possible replacements.

Punjab Kings have been hit with a major setback ahead of IPL 2026 as India’s vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is reportedly unlikely to return to competitive cricket in time for the tournament. According to a report from Dainik Jagran, Iyer’s recovery from a serious laceration injury suffered during the final ODI in Sydney may take longer than expected, leaving Punjab management in panic mode.
A Huge Blow for Punjab Kings
Iyer, who switched from Kolkata Knight Riders to Punjab Kings earlier this year, enjoyed a stellar first season with the franchise. Under his leadership, PBKS reached only their second IPL final in history, and his batting form made him one of the squad’s most valuable players.
Now, with concerns growing over his availability, Punjab Kings may be forced to rethink their plans ahead of the 2026 season.
India’s Newly Appointed Vice-Captain on Sidelines
Iyer stepped into the ODI vice-captaincy role after Shubman Gill was named the full-time captain. He played as India’s deputy for the first time during the recent Australia tour. However, an injury sustained while taking a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey forced him out of action. He was hospitalized in Sydney and expected to be out for at least two months.
Fresh reports suggest Iyer may only regain match fitness just before IPL 2026—raising concerns about rhythm and readiness.
Ruled Out of South Africa and New Zealand Series
The injury has already sidelined him from India’s ongoing South Africa series and the forthcoming New Zealand fixtures. Shreyas had earlier requested the BCCI to rest him from red-ball cricket due to recurring health and back issues.
By conducting medical assessments, including an ultrasound scan and additional imaging, the doctors will decide if he is fit to start rehabilitation by the end of December or the very beginning of January.
Who Could Be the Contender for Iyer's Spot in India’s Middle Order?
The gap created by Iyer's absence is of considerable size in the ODI Indian team especially in the key spot of No. 4. There are multiple candidates now under consideration to take over the position:
Rishabh Pant – Potential ODI comeback
Dhruv Jurel – Rising young contender
Ruturaj Gaikwad – Versatile top-order batter
Sanju Samson – Eyeing a consistent spot
With multiple series lined up before the Champions Trophy and IPL, competition for the slot is expected to be intense.
