Veteran Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has landed in controversy after publicly discussing young South African batter Dewald Brevis’ IPL 2025 contract. While praising Brevis’ explosive batting skills, Ashwin’s comments on the financial aspect of his signing triggered debate within the cricket fraternity.

Ashwin’s use of the word “extra” led to speculation that Brevis was signed above his base price. However, CSK swiftly clarified that Brevis was bought for ₹2.2 crore with no additional payments involved.

Anirudha Srikkanth Criticizes Ashwin

Former CSK player Anirudha Srikkanth slammed Ashwin, calling it inappropriate for an active cricketer to publicly discuss a teammate’s contract. Speaking on his YouTube channel Cheeky Cheeka, Srikkanth said such remarks could create unnecessary tension within the team.

“You never talk about another player’s contract. Being a current player and teammate, this was not right. That’s why CSK had to issue a strong clarification,” Srikkanth said, adding that such statements invite unwanted scrutiny.

Ashwin Issues Clarification

Responding to the criticism, Ashwin explained that his remarks were taken out of context. He stressed that his focus was on Brevis’ cricketing talent, not his contract value.

“My intent was never to discuss money. I was highlighting Brevis’ batting. All IPL contracts are regulated and transparent. If anything is wrong, it won’t be approved,” Ashwin clarified on his own YouTube channel.

Dewald Brevis’ Breakout Form

Since joining CSK, 22-year-old Dewald Brevis has impressed with the bat. In IPL 2025, he scored 225 runs in six innings at an average of 37.50, including two half-centuries with a strike rate of 180.

Internationally, Brevis smashed an unbeaten 125 against Australia and followed it up with another half-century in the T20I series, finishing with 180 runs at a strike rate of 204.55. Riding on this form, he is set to make his ODI debut on August 19.
