At 43, MS Dhoni, former India and Chennai Super Kings captain, has hinted that he could return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year, though he remains undecided about his future in the league. While acknowledging that he is in the final stages of his career, Dhoni mentioned that he would assess his fitness over the next 6 to 8 months before making a decision about his participation in IPL 2026.

"I know I am in the final leg of my career, but it's too early to decide whether I’ll be back for the next IPL season," Dhoni said after a recent match against Kolkata Knight Riders. "The love and affection from fans have been overwhelming, and it's a huge motivation. I'll work on my fitness in the coming months to see if my body can handle the demands of the shortest format of the game."

Dhoni, who had knee surgery two years ago and continues to battle fitness issues, explained that he is realistic about the challenges of continuing at the highest level. Despite these concerns, he has continued to perform for Chennai Super Kings, though his playing time has been limited. Chennai’s head coach, Stephen Fleming, has acknowledged that Dhoni can no longer handle the full 10 overs of intense running, but his experience remains invaluable to the team.

During the post-match presentation, Dhoni reflected on the end of his career, acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding his future in the IPL. "The fans don't know when my last game will be, and that’s why they come to see me play, which is deeply humbling," he added.

Chennai Super Kings, with just three wins in IPL 2025, are struggling this season, and with their playoff hopes dashed, Dhoni emphasized that the team will now focus on testing their bench strength in the remaining matches.

As for the upcoming fixture, CSK will face Rajasthan Royals on May 12 at home, and Dhoni’s role will likely continue to be strategic as the team looks to build for the future.
