IPL Auction 2026: Chennai Super Kings look to rebuild after a poor season, targeting an overseas all-rounder, a Ravindra Jadeja replacement, spin options and fast-bowling depth.
IPL Auction 2026: CSK Target Overseas All-Rounder, Jadeja Replacement and Fast Bowler

The Chennai Super Kings, the champions of IPL five times, are about to have an unusually hectic mini-auction as a result of their last season's performance, which they would rather forget and that saw them at the bottom of the table. CSK has a decent sum of ₹43.40 crores left in the purse, which gives them the financial power to fill in the gaps that are most needed in the squad—quite getting the same kind of players to replace the current ones, however, may not be too easy due to unavailability of the same in an auction where the demand is much higher than the supply.
Before the auction, CSK has already landed one of their key players by bringing in Sanju Samson through trade. Chennai's team has also been looking at future prospects and has brought in young players like Dewald Brevis, Ayush Mhatre and Urvil Patel, who have already added to the overall strength of the team.
On the other hand, the exits of Jadeja and Ashwin have left the Super Kings without an Indian spinner, which is quite an odd situation for a franchise that has always had good spin options. CSK would have to pick with great care three more international players who would not just be of help but also could get directly into the playing XI with Noora Ahmad from Afghanistan already taking one foreign slot.
With Samson set to handle wicketkeeping duties and the top order largely settled, a big question is whether CSK will pursue another proven opener. Cameron Green stands out as a versatile overseas option, offering flexibility across the middle order along with seam-bowling support. Among Indian players, Prithvi Shaw could be on CSK’s radar after going unsold last season. Shaw has been working on reviving his career at Maharashtra, where captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has had a close look at his progress, and a move to Chennai could offer the batter a fresh start.
If CSK back youngsters like Mhatre and Urvil Patel, they may instead go all-in for proven all-rounders such as Venkatesh Iyer or Liam Livingstone, both of whom could inject much-needed intent into the middle order. Jonny Bairstow is another option, though his one-dimensional role could make him a secondary choice. South Africa’s David Miller may also feature in discussions as a reliable finisher, although his lack of bowling limits flexibility. A return move for Rachin Ravindra as a squad player is also not out of the question.
In the fast-bowling department, the release of Matheesha Pathirana means CSK will look for a backup to Nathan Ellis. Familiar faces like Mustafizur Rahman and Lungi Ngidi, both former CSK players, are dependable options. Matt Henry, previously part of the setup, could also be considered for his pace and experience. Other overseas quicks such as Gerald Coetzee, Anrich Nortje and Jacob Duffy are expected to attract interest. Among Indian pacers, Akash Deep, Auqib Nabi, Akash Madhwal and Simarjeet Singh could be on CSK’s shortlist.
Spin remains a major concern. With Jadeja no longer in the picture, Indian spinners Ravi Bishnoi and Rahul Chahar could draw CSK’s attention—unless the franchise opts for overseas spin options, a move that could potentially disrupt team balance.
What to Expect
In a notable shift from their traditional approach, CSK appear increasingly open to investing in young, uncapped talent. While overseas selections will remain crucial, the franchise’s extensive scouting of domestic players suggests local resources could play a key role in shaping the next phase of the Chennai Super Kings rebuild.
