Sunrisers Hyderabad announced that they shall retain Mohammad Shami against several trade offers received by them and concerns about his form and fitness as the IPL 2026 retention deadline loomed.

Shami, who was bought by SRH at a very high price of ₹10 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction, went through a season filled with injuries and inconsistency. With his plight, the franchise decided to stand by the senior seamer as he tries to regain full fitness and perhaps make a comeback to the national side.

SRH Turn Down Shami Trade Offers

According to a report by Cricbuzz, Sunrisers Hyderabad have refused trade offers for the 36-year-old bowler. Shami managed to play only nine matches in IPL 2025, picking up six wickets at an economy rate of 11.23 — far from his best.

Even so, SRH’s management is reportedly confident that the veteran pacer can regain his rhythm and contribute significantly in the upcoming season. With Pat Cummins continuing as captain and Indian pacers Harshal Patel and Jaydev Unadkat in the mix, Shami remains an integral part of their bowling arsenal.

“Despite some offers coming in for Shami, the franchise believes his experience and leadership qualities are crucial,” the report added.

Shami’s Track Record Keeps Him in SRH’s Plans

The 2025 season proved a nightmare for Shami after the glories he experienced in 2024. He had won the Purple Cap with 28 wickets and reminded one and all of his match-winning qualities.

In total, he has played 119 IPL matches and taken 133 wickets while still being one of the most experienced Indian fast bowlers. SRH hopes that after a strong comeback in the Ranji Trophy earlier this year, he can time the new edition of the IPL with form.

Approaching the IPL 2026 auction, the decision to retain Shami showcases SRH's faith in experience rather than form-a big gamble, which may bring huge payoffs or hang heavily around the player in a high-pressure T20 league.
