The non-participation of Shubman Gill, vice-captain of India, in the fourth T20 International match against South Africa in Lucknow led to a lot of conjectures as his foot injury was the official explanation for his absence and also coincided with a string of poor performances that had earlier attracted attention. The management of the team had characterized the injury as the reason for his unavailability but a part of the fan base has the opinion that the "timing" has amplified the questions over the possible involvement of form as a factor.

Gill had only recently came back to the T20I setup after being out of the circuit for the ODI series against South Africa due to a neck issue. The series of five T20Is was perceived as a chance for the right-hander to regain his rhythm, especially post a dismal Asia Cup campaign. But his displays did not allow him to reset and revive hopes.

Through the three matches, Gill could only collect 32 runs. He was out for four and zero in the first two matches at Cuttack and Mullanpur, and then he did show a little bit of recovery when he got 28 runs in 3rd T20I at Dharamshala. With that improvement, however, he was still below par, with a very poor average of 10.66 and a strike rate of 103.22 which is not up to the mark of the shortest format of cricket.

The issue had already caused the discussions to be raised in terms of alterations at the opening positions in the batting order with Sanju Samson being projected as a probable back-up opener for the T20I in Lucknow. Nonetheless, those disputes became pointless after mist caused by smog led to the abandonment of the game at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium. Gill's injury verdict, on the other hand, kept him away from the spotlight and derision.

Looking at the overall situation, Gill's T20I returns in 2025 have been consistent but not mind-blowing. This year he has amassed 291 runs in 15 matches, with an average of 24.25 and a strike rate of 137.26. These numbers are not very bad by themselves, however, considering the player as a future leader and vital part of the Indian top-order, they do not meet the expectations.

Injuries in different areas have posed a problem for India’s selection, and Axar Patel has already been ruled out for the rest of the series. Gill's nonappearance might be the opportunity for Samson, who last played in a T20I during the tour of Australia. Samson had a fabulous 2024 as an opener, amassing 512 runs in 14 matches at an average of 39.38 and a strike rate of 182.20 which makes his possible comeback a captivating subplot.

As the series moves to a turning point, Gill's health, form and position in the batting order are being carefully monitored and the debates regarding selection are likely to grow louder as India prepares for the more formidable global challenges ahead.
