India’s Asia Cup 2025 Squad: Shubman Gill Likely In, Rinku Singh’s Spot Under Threat – Report
India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement is around the corner. Reports suggest Shubman Gill is likely to return, while Rinku Singh may miss out due to form struggles.
Shubman Gill is expected to return to India’s Asia Cup 2025 T20 squad, but Rinku Singh’s spot looks uncertain.

The Indian squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 T20 tournament is expected to be announced on Tuesday, and early reports suggest some tough calls lie ahead for chief selector Ajit Agarkar and his panel.
According to sources, Test captain Shubman Gill is set to make a return to the T20 setup, while Rinku Singh, once hailed as India’s next big finisher, may miss out due to form concerns.
Rinku Singh’s Decline in Focus
Rinku shot to fame with his five consecutive sixes against Yash Dayal in the IPL and was seen as a dependable lower-order finisher. However, his recent performances have raised doubts. After being left out of India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad (only named as standby), he has struggled for opportunities.
In the 2024 IPL, Rinku faced just 113 balls, and in the 2025 season, only 134 deliveries – a sharp contrast to his earlier impact. Reports indicate that even under Gautam Gambhir’s mentorship at KKR, Rinku was not a central figure in the batting order, hinting at a reduced role.
Tough Selection Calls Ahead
If fully fit, the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (captain), and Hardik Pandya are seen as automatic selections in the top and middle order. With Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal also in contention, the competition for batting slots is intense.
A former national selector told PTI:
“You can’t disturb the current top five and also bring in Shubman. If Gill plays, someone has to miss out – and right now, Rinku’s place looks the most uncertain.”
Finisher’s Role Still Covered
Even if Rinku is dropped, India has backup options. Shivam Dube (if fit) brings big-hitting power along with a bowling option, while Jitesh Sharma offers wicketkeeping flexibility. Both are considered more multi-dimensional than Rinku, which may weigh in their favour.
The Road Ahead
The Asia Cup will also serve as a crucial testing ground before the T20 World Cup 2026, set to be hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka. With stiff competition for every batting slot, the selectors are expected to make some bold decisions.
All eyes are now on Tuesday’s official announcement, which will confirm whether Gill makes the cut and whether Rinku Singh retains his place in India’s T20 plans.
