The Indian squad for the 2025 Asia Cup T20I will be unveiled on Tuesday (August 19), with chief selector Ajit Agarkar expected to make the announcement through a press release instead of a press conference. The Suryakumar Yadav-led side will return to T20I action after seven months, with several selection dilemmas keeping fans and experts guessing.

Jaiswal vs Gill for Opening Slot

According to reports, Yashasvi Jaiswal is set to edge out Shubman Gill as India’s back-up opener, joining Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order. Gill, who has been leading the Test side, is likely to be rested alongside other red-ball specialists with the West Indies Test series starting just three days after the Asia Cup final.

Iyer Faces Four-Way Contest

One of the biggest calls for selectors will be choosing between Shreyas Iyer, Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, and Rinku Singh, with only one spot up for grabs. Despite Shreyas Iyer’s strong IPL 2025 campaign (604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07), Tilak Varma’s stellar form at No.3 for India could keep him ahead in the pecking order.

Bumrah Likely to Return

Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is expected to make a comeback, provided he clears the fitness test. Arshdeep Singh is set to retain his place, while either Prasidh Krishna or Harshit Rana could be picked as the third seamer. However, Mohammed Siraj might miss out, despite being a key figure in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy earlier this year.

Balancing Workload Ahead of Test Series

Selectors may once again rest all-format players to prioritize red-ball commitments. With the WTC points on the line against West Indies starting October 2, the team management could opt to keep Test regulars out of the Asia Cup squad.

India’s Winning T20I Momentum

Since the 2024 T20 World Cup, India has lost only two T20Is, making it highly likely that the selectors will stick with the winning combination from recent series against Bangladesh, South Africa, and England.

The official announcement is less than 24 hours away, and fans are eagerly waiting to see who makes the cut as India begins its road to the 2026 T20 World Cup.
