India Issues Injury Update on Shreyas Iyer After Sydney ODI

The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has made an official statement about Shreyas Iyer’s injury that he got in the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. The middle-order batter had to leave the ground after catching a ball during India’s nine-wicket win in the last match of the series.
According to the BCCI, Iyer suffered an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding and was immediately taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status,” the statement said.
The BCCI further confirmed that the Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney to oversee Iyer’s day-to-day recovery process.
How the Injury Happened
The incident was caused by Iyer and his brilliant running catch that led to the dismissal of Alex Carey off Harshit Rana's bowling, sprinting back from backward point. But, the catch was on a wrong foot for Iyer who landed in a strange way and looked very painful, holding along his left side. The team doctors helped him on the ground before he was lifted for the Medical Evaluation.
Iyer’s Recent Performance
Before the injury, Iyer had scored 11 and 61 runs in the first two ODIs, both of which India lost. In the final match, India bounced back strongly, registering a commanding nine-wicket win, powered by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten partnership, sealing the series 2-1.
What’s Next for Iyer and Team India
Shreyas Iyer has not been included in India’s squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia, starting October 29. His next potential return could be during India’s three-match ODI series against South Africa, beginning November 30, 2025, depending on his recovery progress.
