The suspense around India’s T20I squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE continues, with key selection calls expected to shape the team’s road to the T20 World Cup 2026. The official squad announcement is scheduled for August 19, but debates around the opening pair and middle-order slots are already fueling excitement.

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma are likely to continue as India’s first-choice opening duo, but their pairing has sparked questions ahead of the tournament. Test skipper Shubman Gill, despite his recent form in the IPL, may once again miss out, as selectors prefer to back the core unit that featured in recent T20I series against England, South Africa, and Bangladesh.

The No.3 slot also remains open, with Tilak Varma’s struggles against spin raising doubts. Shreyas Iyer, in red-hot form during the IPL, could make a comeback at that position. Former stars, including Mohammed Kaif and Harbhajan Singh, have already put forward their versions of the ideal squad—each leaving out big names in favor of balance and form.

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management remains under discussion, though his performances since returning from injury make him an automatic pick. Kuldeep Yadav, too, is being seen as a key spin weapon despite uncertainty over his place in every game.

India’s Asia Cup 2025 campaign begins on September 10 against UAE in Dubai, followed by the much-awaited clash with Pakistan on September 14, and a game against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.
