Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, known for his explosive batting and game-changing presence, has officially retired from One Day International (ODI) cricket. At 36 years old, Maxwell bids farewell to a stellar career that spanned over a decade and 149 matches, leaving fans and cricket lovers around the world reminiscing about his thrilling performances.

Maxwell, who announced his retirement on 2 June 2025, has been a vital force for Australia’s ODI side. With 3,990 runs in 136 innings at an average of 33.81, along with four centuries and 23 fifties, he made a significant impact in the middle and lower order. His 77 wickets further showcased his all-round capabilities.

Fans flooded social media with tributes, calling his departure “the end of an era.” One user noted, “Maxwell retired to give the next generation a chance ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup—true champion thinking.” Another fan fondly recalled his unforgettable unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, which many consider one of the greatest ODI innings of recent times.

Maxwell’s ability to shift momentum was unparalleled. According to Wisden, he ranks fifth in most runs scored for Australia batting at number five or lower and holds the highest strike rate (123.36) in that group. Remarkably, all his ODI centuries came while batting at positions five, six, or seven, underscoring his reputation as a dynamic middle-order batsman.

His power-hitting prowess set him apart globally as well. Among players with at least 1,000 ODI runs, Maxwell boasts Australia’s highest strike rate at an incredible 126.70. Only West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell, who played fewer matches, has a higher strike rate.

When it comes to six-hitting, Maxwell’s numbers are equally impressive. With 150+ ODI sixes to his name, his sixes-per-innings ratio of 1.13 is second only to Indian opener Rohit Sharma’s 1.29.

Maxwell’s memorable moments include the 2015 World Cup on home soil, where he scored 324 runs in six innings at an extraordinary average of 64.80 and a strike rate of 182.02. Fast forward to 2023, his iconic unbeaten 201 off 128 balls against Afghanistan—played while battling cramps, back spasms, and extreme heat—turned the match on its head and exemplified his grit and resilience.

As Maxwell steps away from ODI cricket, the sport bids farewell to one of its most exciting and fearless players. Fans, teammates, and cricket experts alike will long remember his “Mad Max” moments that electrified stadiums and inspired generations.
