The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has strongly condemned Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi for allegedly taking the Asia Cup 2025 trophy and medals to his hotel after India’s victory over Pakistan.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia did not mince words while criticising Naqvi’s actions, calling them “totally unexpected” and vowing a formal protest over the incident.

“India is fighting a war with a country, and a leader belonging to that country was supposed to hand over the trophy to us. We cannot accept a trophy from a person who represents a country waging war against our nation. That is why we refused the trophy. But that does not mean the gentleman can take the trophy and medals meant for our country to his hotel room. We hope his good sense will prevail. A strong protest will be lodged against his behaviour during today’s prize distribution ceremony,” Saikia told ANI.

The controversy erupted after Suryakumar Yadav and his teammates had hammered out a win against Pakistan while chasing 147 on Dubai soil. In spite of the victory, the Men in Blue refused to shake hands with their rivals and declined to accept the trophy from Naqvi, who dons the roles of the PCB chief and a Pakistani minister, also an extremely vocal anti-India person.

Saikia further slammed the ACC chief for what he termed an “unsportsmanlike” act:

“We decided not to take the Asia Cup 2025 trophy from the ACC chairman, who is a main leader of Pakistan. However, it is unfortunate that he took the trophy and medals along with him. This is completely unsportsmanlike, and we hope the items are returned to India at the earliest.”

Match Highlights

Tilak Varma was the standout performer, scoring an unbeaten 69 off 53 balls and stabilising India’s chase amidst early wickets.

Rinku Singh, playing his first ball of the Asia Cup, struck the winning boundary to seal India’s victory.

The incident has sparked widespread debate in cricketing circles, highlighting tensions in India–Pakistan sporting encounters and raising questions about the conduct of officials during high-profile tournaments.
