Mumbai, Jul 31
India’s love for cricket isn’t just a cultural phenomenon, it’s an economic powerhouse. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) generated a staggering ₹9,741.7 crore in FY 2023–24.
This ICYMI report dissects where the money comes from and what it tells us about the business of Indian cricket.
Talking to Bizz Buzz, Dr Sandeep Goyal, Managing Director, Rediffusion says, ‘This ICYMI report tracks an unusual statistic - bowlers who have conceded 100+ runs in one Test innings. Jasprit Bumrah and Kapil Dev both feature in the list.”
A 100+ runs in an innings sounds massive, no? But it also reflects the work load some of the leading bowlers have shouldered over the years. The list is very telling ..., he said.
In FY 2023–24, over 59.10 per cent of BCCI’s revenue came from the Indian Premier League alone that's ₹5,761 Cr, making it the crown jewel of Indian cricket economics.
The BCCI received a hefty ₹1,042 Cr from the International Cricket Council, accounting for 10.70 per cent of its total revenue.
This reflects India’s dominant influence in global cricket.
BCCI earned ₹361 Cr (3.90 per cent of total revenue) from non-IPL media rights. This income comes from broadcasting rights for international cricket matches and tournaments, contributing significantly to BCCI's diverse revenue streams.
BCCI earned ₹361 Cr (3.7 per cent) from ticket sales, hospitality, and commercial rights for India’s home international fixtures.
₹400 Cr (4.1 per cent) came from miscellaneous sources, showcasing BCCI’s diversified revenue portfolio beyond matches and tournaments.
Cricket sells, even when it’s not on the field.
With 59% of its revenue from IPL and growing streams like WPL and global rights, BCCI has built a billion-rupee engine powered by fan love, smart deals, and cricketing excellence.
In India, cricket pays big time.
