The central contracts of India’s senior cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are expected to come under major review during the BCCI Apex Council’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on December 22. The meeting, to be conducted virtually, will also discuss revised contracts for women’s domestic cricket players.

In the ongoing 2024–25 contract cycle, Kohli and Rohit were retained in the A+ category, which carries an annual retainer of ₹7 crore, despite both stepping away from T20Is after India’s T20 World Cup triumph in June 2024. Over the past year, the senior duo has retired from both Tests and T20Is, and now features exclusively in ODIs.

According to a PTI report, the BCCI brass will now decide whether the two stalwarts will continue in the top-tier A+ category through retrospective performance evaluation or be moved down to Grade A, which offers a ₹5 crore annual retainer — a reduction of ₹2 crore from their current salaries. The board’s four-tier structure currently pays:

A+ – ₹7 crore

A – ₹5 crore

B – ₹3 crore

C – ₹1 crore

The report further states that India’s captain for Tests and ODIs, Shubman Gill, is likely to be promoted from Grade A to A+, joining Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja, who recently served as vice-captain in India’s last Test assignment, is also expected to retain his A+ status.

Other Key Agenda Items

Beyond player contracts, the AGM will cover:

Proposed revisions to umpire and match referee compensation

Updates regarding the BCCI’s digital platforms

Administrative matters following the board’s recent leadership reshuffle

This will be the first AGM since Mithun Manhas took charge as president. Other leadership changes include Raghuram Bhatt as treasurer, Devajit Saikia as secretary, and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia as joint secretary. The new council also includes Jaydev Shah, president of the Saurashtra Cricket Association, who joins as a councillor.

The upcoming AGM could mark a significant shift in India’s contract framework, especially for two of its biggest icons, Kohli and Rohit, while signalling a new era led by Shubman Gill.
