The highly anticipated Asia Cup 2025 is set to take place in the UAE from September 9 to 28, with matches being played in the T20 format. The tournament will kick off with Afghanistan taking on Hong Kong, while Team India begins its campaign against the UAE on September 10.
The BCCI selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, is expected to announce the squad on August 19 or 20. Selection will depend heavily on the medical fitness reports provided by the Centre of Excellence Sports Science team, particularly concerning T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav, who is recovering from hernia surgery. Currently, Suryakumar is training in Bengaluru’s nets.
Key Contenders and Selection Dilemmas
Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, and a fit-again Suryakumar Yadav are expected to secure spots. However, accommodating in-form Test skipper Shubman Gill, who shone in IPL 2025, poses a challenge—especially with Yashasvi Jaiswal also in contention. KL Rahul is unlikely to feature in the squad.
The second wicketkeeper slot is hotly contested between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel, with Jitesh’s finishing heroics for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2025 giving him an edge.
Bowling Department Challenges
Injured Nitish Kumar Reddy is set to miss out, making way for Shivam Dube. Washington Sundar and Axar Patel are expected to be the spin all-rounders, while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh are near-certainties. For the final pace bowling spot, selectors must choose between Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana, who impressed with 25 wickets in the last IPL.
