December 16 is inscribed into the historical timeline of India as Vijay Diwas, a day that glorifies one of the greatest battles won by the nation. On this date of 1971, the Indian Armed Forces had successfully defeated the enemey, the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani troops in Dhaka—this was the largest military surrender ever since the end of World War II.

The outcome of the battle indicated not only the cessation of the 1971 War but also marked the formation of Bangladesh as a free country. India under the command of General Sam Manekshaw and supported by the bravery of soldiers from all three services conducted a blitzkrieg campaign which was not only a masterpiece but also a rude shock to the world's perception.

Yet, Vijay Diwas is not only about military triumph; it imparts the lessons of the values of discipline, sacrifice, and unity. The Bangladesh Liberation War claimed the lives of many Indian soldiers, and this was primarily due to their a-priori decision to shield people's rights by co-operating with the latter.

The country yet again revives and pays respect to the valour of its armed forces and remembers the martyrs of December 16, 1971, the embodiment of the nation’s pride, a pride that will endure forever.
