On the eighth day of Shardiya Navratri, Maa Mahagauri, the eighth form of Goddess Durga, is called upon with glorifications. She is considered the symbol of purity, supreme beauty, and compassion. Devotees admire her majestic presence and divine blessings.

Who is Worshipped on Navratri Day 8?

On the eighth day of Navratri, the devotees worship Maa Mahagauri, the name of which means “extremely white,” denoting peacefulness, inner purity, and calmness. She is said to have a beautiful fair complexion like that of the moon or of a conch shell and is generally shown riding a bull (Nandi) with white clothes.

The Tale of Maa Mahagauri

Maa Mahagauri, according to Hindu mythology, is another version of Parvati, the mother of all powers. Parvati undertook severe austerities in the Himalayas for thousands of years, submitting herself to the most agonizing conditions, living without food, and even for Lord Shiva's adoration. Her hard austerities darkened her complexion.

Observing the strength in her, Lord Shiva blessed her, restoring her golden-white radiance. Upon her bath in the holy river Ganga, she became Mahagauri-the divine being of absolute purity, compassion, and spiritual awakening.
