How to share Spotify Premium for less with the Family Plan
Spotify is one of the most popular music streaming services right now, with millions of songs available and options like offline listening or ad-free listening for Premium users. But if the whole family wants to listen to music, there's a more affordable option with the Spotify Family Plan, which allows up to six accounts with a single payment.
As streaming services have grown in popularity, the number of subscriptions we have in our daily lives is increasing. So much so that managing them with the goal of paying less for each one is a common goal in most households. Among all the options available, family plans are always one of the best solutions, as they allow us to share our plans with the rest of our family, significantly reducing the final price we pay.
In this article, we explain what the Spotify Family Plan is, what requirements you must meet to sign up for it, how much it costs, and the main features and benefits that all members will enjoy.
What is it?
The Spotify Family Plan allows you to have up to six Premium accounts with people living under the same roof. You'll only pay one price for the six subscriptions, and each person can enjoy their music on their own device. You don't have to be at home to listen to songs; you can do so while traveling, in the car, or anywhere. Each member can listen to Spotify wherever, whenever, and on their own device with their own username and password.
Unlike other streaming service subscriptions, we don't have the same restrictions regarding geographic mobility when it comes to music. So we'll be able to share our account without too many issues.
Differences with Spotify Duo
Spotify Premium Duo is another subscription available , allowing you to have two accounts, provided they are both people who live together. It's the same as the family plan, but with fewer members. It also includes Duo Mix, a playlist tailored to both of your tastes, or each premium account can be set up separately so you don't have to share passwords or playlists.
In this case, the Spotify Duo Plan price is $14.99 per month with two Premium accounts, ad-free music, and offline streaming. Depending on whether there are more or fewer of you living under the same roof, it'll be worth the Family Plan with six accounts or whether you can afford to pay less with the Duo. If there are only two of you, it won't make sense to pay $19.99 per month for the Family Plan if you don't need more accounts. If there are four of you, the total price will be much more affordable.
Another important detail that differentiates both plans is that, within the Family Plan, we find Parental Controls. This way, we can block songs with explicit lyrics. This way, we'll ensure that if children use a family account, they can't listen to that explicit music.
Requirements
To qualify for the Family Plan, you must live with the plan administrator, create your own Spotify account, and receive an invitation to join the plan. If you already have a Spotify account, you'll be able to keep your existing account and all the information you already have stored in it.
The requirements are:
• Living with someone who administers the plan.
• Sign in or register with your own account.
• Indicate the address.
It's important to note that if you already have Spotify Premium, you can upgrade to the Duo plan and download music, listen to it ad-free, and skip songs without limits. This means you have the same features as the Premium plan, but it's a bit cheaper than if you had two subscriptions.
How much is it worth?
A single monthly invoice of $19.99 is paid to the authorized person who registered the subscription. Other members will not have to pay anything additional. In addition, we may occasionally find temporary offers, such as the first three months of free trial of the service, provided you have never been a Premium member. Or, the first month is free.
There's no permanence, and you can cancel the plan whenever you want. Just don't leave it until the last minute, as you may be charged if you cancel the same day your premium expires. This happens because the music streaming platform charges you beforehand. If this happens to you, you can continue enjoying the music service for another month. And, most importantly, you won't be charged again.
Features and options
It's not a Spotify account that can be shared between six people. Each member of the Spotify Family Plan has access to their own Premium account; they just need to log in to Spotify. Each member can create their own playlists, each member has personalized music recommendations based on their tastes or history, and all members can access Offline Mode, listen to music without ads, or skip songs without limits until they find the one they want.
There's no need to share login details, split time, or fight over who uses it on one device or another. There are six individual accounts, albeit with a single monthly payment and some features like parental controls to control what music others listen to.
If you already have Spotify Premium individually, nothing will change. By joining the Spotify Family Plan, you'll keep all your saved music, recommendations, and playlists.
An administrator
There is an administrator who will be in charge of making monthly payments, establishing the addresses of all members (or changing them if necessary), adding or removing people from the plan, and controlling the explicit music that group members can listen to.
The plan administrator cannot be changed. If you wish to change it, you will need to cancel the plan, and all accounts will revert to the free service. Starting with the next billing, a new administrator may open a new plan and send invitations to everyone.
The administrator will also be responsible for changing the home address, either because you made a mistake or because you're moving. Simply go to the Spotify "family" page and follow the steps provided.
Family Mix
Although everyone has their own tastes, there are times when you'll all be together. For example, during car trips or family gatherings. In that case, Spotify Family Plan members have access to Family Mix. Family Mix is a playlist based on your listening history and is constantly updated. This way, there's a mix of everything you like.
If you don't want to be included in Family Mix, or if you don't want to be included in Family Mix, you can leave the shared playlist in "Settings." You're not obligated to listen to it; simply choose the playlist instead.
Parental controls
One of the advantages of the Spotify Family Plan is that you can set explicit content filters for your family members, allowing you to decide who listens to what. This means that if there are minor children in the family and they have their own account on the plan, you can block explicit content for them.
To control explicit content:
• Sign in to the Spotify Family Plan page.
• Choose the member you want.
• Toggle Allow explicit content.
How to get the Family Plan?
Once we've reviewed all the features, benefits, and price of the Family Plan, it's time to take the step to purchase it. In this case, we must do the following:
• Sign up or log in to Spotify.
• Invite family members who live with you to Premium.
• They will accept the invitation.
• You can listen to music or create playlists.
Leaving a family plan
If a person invited to a Spotify Family Plan doesn't live at the administrator's address or doesn't meet any of the eligibility requirements or criteria, they will lose access to the plan and their account will be reverted to the free version of the music platform.
If there was an error and the requirements are met, Spotify will allow us to verify that person's account again, and it will be re-validated. Through a link provided by the platform, you must confirm the postal code within a maximum of 7 days, and the company will perform the appropriate checks to decide whether or not to add the account to the Family Plan.
If you were previously on a Family Plan, you can always upgrade to a traditional Premium Plan if you no longer qualify. The main drawback is the price, which won't be as affordable, but you'll be able to continue listening to music without ads and with all the other benefits you're already accustomed to.
Join a Premium Family Plan
If someone in your family who lives with you already has an account on the platform, they can use that same account to join the Spotify Family Plan created by the administrator and still keep all the information from their original account:
• Music.
• Playlist.
• Recommendations.
In any case, if you meet the requirements to join a Spotify Premium Family Plan, the administrator will need to send you an invitation to join. If you already have a Premium account through a partner company like your phone or internet provider and want to join a Premium Family Plan, you'll have to cancel your current account and wait until your Premium membership runs out before joining the Spotify Family Plan.
However, it's also possible that the invitation expires. If this happens to you, try opening the link in a private or incognito window in your web browser. If that doesn't work, you'll need to ask the primary user on the plan to send you another invitation.
If a family member who doesn't yet have a Spotify account wants to join, the first thing they'll need to do is register their own account, log in, and then enter their address, which in this case must match the one provided by the administrator.
Problems joining the Spotify Family Plan
There are times when, no matter how hard you try, you just can't successfully join the Spotify Family Plan. Before you panic, let's try to address the most common mistakes people make when trying to sign up for this premium membership. However, it's always important to check beforehand that everything is in order so you can enjoy the music app without any problems: whether the monthly payment has been made correctly, whether your mobile data is activated for listening to music, or whether your Wi-Fi is connected to one of the networks near your location. After completing these checks, let's move on to the problems that may arise.
When sending the invitation to one of the members who will be part of the Family Plan, it's essential that the address you provide matches the address of the plan administrator. Otherwise, the tool won't grant them permission to join the family unit. Therefore, it's vitally important to enter all the information in the address section correctly, as it must be exactly the same as when the administrator registered. This ensures there's no error and the person can successfully join the subscription. If Spotify doesn't find the address automatically, always try entering it manually, adding your street address and phone number.
Another common case is that the invitation link doesn't work and an error occurs every time the new member tries to join. This could be because the invitation link has expired because it has already been used by another member, or the link itself can't be opened in the browser, so you'll need to use other alternatives or use incognito mode.
