🙏 The History and Significance
Guru Nanak Jayanti marks the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who was born in 1469 in a place then called Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib in Pakistan). His teachings preach truth, compassion, humility, equality, and dedication to God. In fact, the festival celebrates his birth and reaffirms the principles he stood for.
Usually, the celebrations commence two days earlier with Akhand Path, a 48-hour uninterrupted reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, which is the holy scripture of the Sikhs.
Nagarkirtan processions start one day before Gurpurab, with the Panj Pyare leading the choirs as they sing hymns and preach the works and teachings of Guru Nanak. By the time the festivities actually begin, the Prabhat Fheris (early morning processions) are in full swing, followed by Kirtans, Kathas, and Langar that extend community service toward equality.
🌼 The Essence of Gurpurab
The occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti is to remind that message of the Guru — "Naam Japo, Kirat Karo, Vand Chhako": meaning the worship of God’s name, and then an honest way of making money, which includes giving away. The celebration asks men to walk the path of justice, humbleness, and service to mankind.
