Dhanteras 2025: 6 Sacred Foods to Eat for Wealth and Prosperity on This Auspicious Day

The holiday season has started, and Dhanteras marks the first day of the Diwali celebrations — a time that brings good health, good wealth, and prospering. So, Dhanteras will be on October 18, 2025, after this. Also known as Dhantrayodashi, the festival happens on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of the Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month Kartik.
On this holy day, the followers of the Lord Dhanvantari, who is the deity of Ayurveda and health, and Goddess Lakshmi, who is believed to be the bearer of wealth and fortune, worship them with great fervor. It is a general belief that purchasing gold, silver, and utensils brings good luck, as it signifies the arrival of prosperity in one’s house.
Nonetheless, Dhanteras is not only about divine rituals but also food which is a central aspect. The offer and the consumption of certain traditional dishes are believed to be the means of inviting abundance, happiness, and blessings from Goddess Lakshmi. Here are six divine foods that are traditionally prepared and eaten on Dhanteras with the belief that they will confer the blessings of good luck and prosperity.
🪔 1. Kheer
Kheer is a festive must-have made of rice, milk, sugar, and nuts. This rich dessert is considered a favorite of the goddess of wealth. It is said that the giving and sharing of kheer on Dhanteras will invite the goddess’ blessings and new beginnings, sweet, that is.
🪔 2. Naivedya
Maharashtra’s devotees concoct naivedya, a pale but holy mixture of crushed dry coriander seeds and jaggery, during the festive season. This offering to Goddess Lakshmi bears the meaning of plenty and riches, it is believed that thus a year of good harvests and wealth will be granted.
🪔 3. Kheel Batashe
Kheel Batashe is produced from the first crop of rice; thus, it is of great importance. Presenting this crunchy delight to the goddess is an expression of being thankful for her bounty. It is said that eating Kheel Batashe on Dhanteras will endow one with good fortune and luck.
🪔 4. Boondi Laddoo
Boondi Laddoos are presented as prasad to Lord Ganesha along with Goddess Lakshmi. The catch is that whoever consumes these sweet golden spheres as prasad is thought to have their obstacles during the journey to success and prosperity removed.
🪔 5. Panchamrit
The five holy ingredients —milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar— that are the components of this sacrosanct drink are blended in a particular way to make it consumable. Individual elements represent:
Milk – Purity
Curd – Affluence
Ghee – Power
Honey – Togetherness
Sugar – Joy
Panchamrit taking during Dhanteras is meant to signify purification (both inner and outer), health, and peace.
🪔 6. Lapsi
Prepared from wheat flour, ghee, sugar syrup, and nuts, Lapsi is a complete sweet dish that has become one of the favourite offerings to the pious Goddess Lakshmi. The belief is that the serving of Lapsi on Dhanteras will bring good luck and mark a major milestone at the beginning of the Diwali festival.
