Could your morning coffee be causing your hair to fall out? Recently, health coach Theo Bergmann sparked a conversation on Instagram about the potential link between excessive coffee consumption and women's hair loss.

Bergmann suggests that too much caffeine, especially from coffee, can weaken the adrenal glands over time by causing them to release more adrenaline. He believes this weakened state is a leading cause of hair loss in women.

However, chief dietician DHEE Hospital - Shubha Ramesh L disagrees with this coffee and hair health statement. She explains that research has primarily focused on the benefits of caffeine when applied directly to the scalp rather than when consumed orally. Studies show that caffeine applied to the scalp can stimulate hair follicles and extend the hair growth cycle by counteracting the effects of dihydrotestosterone, a hormone linked to hair loss.

One significant study from 2007, focusing on the effects of caffeine on hair, demonstrated that when caffeine was applied to hair follicles extracted from individuals experiencing hair loss, it increased hair growth by 46% and extended their lifecycle by 33%.

The key difference lies in how caffeine is absorbed. When applied topically, caffeine reaches the hair follicles directly, bypassing the digestive system, where its potency may be reduced. In contrast, consuming caffeine orally primarily affects the body systemically and doesn't specifically target hair follicles.

Excessive caffeine intake can potentially disrupt hormonal balance and hinder nutrient absorption, indirectly impacting female hair care. High caffeine levels may increase cortisol, a stress hormone that can lead to hair shedding. Additionally, caffeine can interfere with the absorption of essential nutrients like iron and magnesium, vital for healthy hair growth.

While moderate caffeine consumption typically doesn't cause hair loss, excessive intake can have negative health effects that indirectly affect hair quality and growth.

To maintain optimal hair health, Shubha recommends monitoring caffeine intake, keeping it within the recommended limit of 400 mg per day. Additionally, individuals concerned about hair loss may explore hair care products containing caffeine to stimulate hair growth and improve overall hair health.
