As the ‘Cancel ChatGPT’ movement gains traction online over OpenAI’s U.S. government partnership, Anthropic has launched a new feature allowing paid users to import saved memories from rival AI chatbots directly into Claude.

Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic has introduced a new “import memory” feature for its chatbot Claude, enabling paid subscribers to transfer saved memories from other AI platforms. The rollout comes at a time when online sentiment appears to be shifting amid a growing “Cancel ChatGPT” trend.

The company announced the update via its official Claude handle on Threads, stating that users can now bring over stored preferences and contextual memories from competing AI chatbots. The feature is currently limited to Claude’s paid-tier subscribers.

The move is widely seen as an attempt to capitalise on rising social media discussions about switching away from ChatGPT, following renewed debate over AI use in government and military contexts.

Social media backlash fuels momentum

The “Cancel ChatGPT” hashtag began trending after OpenAI announced a partnership with the U.S. government to deploy its AI models in classified environments. The Sam Altman-led company said it had established safeguards or “red lines” for federal use, including restrictions on mass domestic surveillance, fully autonomous weapons systems and certain high-stakes automated decisions.

However, the announcement triggered backlash across Reddit and other social media platforms, where some users expressed concerns about the broader implications of AI deployment in military settings. Several posts called for cancelling ChatGPT subscriptions and shifting to Claude instead.

One Reddit user wrote, “Let’s see proof of your cancellation,” reflecting the tone of the online debate.

Anthropic’s stance on military use

Anthropic recently made headlines after reports that the U.S. Department of Defense cancelled its arrangement with the company. The development followed Anthropic’s refusal to compromise on what it described as two non-negotiable conditions for military usage of Claude: prohibiting mass domestic surveillance and banning fully autonomous weapons applications.

Subsequently, U.S. officials signalled concerns about Anthropic’s position, with some describing the company as a potential “supply chain risk.” The political controversy amplified public attention around the differing approaches of major AI firms to government collaboration.

Feature race among AI giants

Anthropic’s new memory import tool also arrives amid increasing competition in the AI chatbot market. Google is reportedly working on a similar feature for its Gemini chatbot that would allow users to transfer conversational memories from rival platforms.

By enabling portability of user context and preferences, Anthropic may be attempting to reduce switching friction — a key barrier preventing users from moving between AI ecosystems.

Strategic timing

Industry analysts note that AI memory features are becoming central to user retention strategies. By preserving past interactions, tone preferences and ongoing projects, chatbots can deliver more personalised responses — making it harder for users to abandon a platform.

Anthropic’s rollout appears carefully timed to coincide with heightened scrutiny of AI-government partnerships and growing public debate around ethical guardrails in artificial intelligence.

While it remains unclear whether the “Cancel ChatGPT” wave will translate into meaningful subscription shifts, Anthropic’s latest update signals an aggressive push to capture dissatisfied users in an increasingly polarised AI landscape.
