Mumbai City FC beat Mohun Bagan 3-1 to win ISL title

Mumbai City FC came from a goal behind to beat Mohun Bagan Super Giant 3-1 to win the Indian Super League (ISL) title 2023-24. Jorge Pereya Diaz (53’), Bipin Singh (81’) and Jakub Votjus (90+7’) scored for Mumbai City FC after Jason Cummings put Mohun Bagan in the lead in the 44th minute.

The 62,000 Mohun Bagan fans at the Salt Lake Stadium, who erupted in joy when Cummings scored, were put to a deathly silence in the second half of the final as Mumbai called the shots.

Dimitrios Petratos gave Mohun Bagan the opening he was looking for when he shot from distance but Mumbai City goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa, who saved the initial strike, only ended up parrying the ball on the face of the goal for Cummings to latch on to the rebound and score.

Going into the break with a 1-0 lead, Mohun Bagan came all guns blazing but Mumbai City FC were desperate to find an opening to restore parity. They did get one minute into the second half when Alberto Noguera sent a long ball from the midfield to Pereya Diaz, who scored from a narrow angle to equalise.

Noguera and Diaz, the architect and the finisher of the equaliser, were substituted by the hour mark due to injuries, while Vojtus, Vinit Rai and Bipin came on to the field.

Three fresh legs made an iota of difference as Mumbai City FC started playing in an aggressive manner, pushing Mohun Bagan on the backfoot.

Mumbai City got the lead they were looking for in the 81st minute when Chhangte, who took a shot on goal, couldn’t be saved cleanly, only for Votjus, who was in a perfect position to set up Bipin to score.

Mohun Bagan tried every possible way to score in the seven minutes of extra time and Mumbai City FC stunned the entire Salt Lake Stadium when Votjus scored to hand Mumbai City FC their second ISL title.
